LONGEVITY TIPS
- Never jump start a discharged battery with a
booster battery or generator system that is greater than 12 volts. A
high voltage surge will permanently damage the vehicle's ignition, starter
motor, and electronic engine control system.
- Keep the battery free of corrosion. Battery
corrosion at the terminals or
cable clamps restricts current flow both out of and in to the battery. This
means the battery cannot provide power on demand or accept a recharge when
needed. A strong battery will not be able to overcome corrosion.
- If distilled water is added to a battery in
wintertime to adjust the level of electrolyte solution, the car must be driven a
few miles to allow the battery to operate. This will mix the water and
electrolyte; if not mixed,
the water will remain on top of the cell, freeze, and crack the battery.
- Consider keeping the battery warm overnight with a
100-150 watt work light. A battery loses power in cold weather and will
have more trouble starting an engine, which could lead to wear and oil
contamination.
- Do not keep the starter on for more than 5 seconds
at one time. It is better to make short, frequent starting attempts than
a few, long ones. Exceedingly long engine cranking will cause the starter motor
to drain the battery.
